Vaginal Yeast Infection: Definition, Causes, Symptoms, Treatment


Vaginal Yeast Infection also regarded as vulvovaginal candidiasis since it's usually caused by a form of yeast which is called candida. It occurs when the growth of healthy yeast that lives in your vagina grows out of control. Due to overgrowth of it, it would lead to symptoms like severe itching and irritation in that particular area.

There's a myth about this disease that this is a sexually transmitted infection (STI), which is popularly known as a sexually transmitted disease (STD). The women who are not sexually active can also get this disease but the one's who are suffering from this disease and are sexually active too can spread the disease to a maximum level.


You would certainly get another yeast infection after getting one. You can detect vaginal yeast infection symptoms within several days. Maybe maximum the detection period raises to two weeks but often not more than than that. It's an estimation that almost 75 per cent of women get a yeast infection once in their lifetime.

The vaginal yeast infection is caused by the popular yeast species known as Candida albicans, but the other species of it is also prone to cause an infection. All of it demands different treatment.


Although, Lactobacillus, a friendly bacteria that usually live in all our systems like the digestive, urinary, genital system without causing any type of damage in it.  This bacteria creates a safe environment that doesn't lead to the overgrowth of yeast. But sometimes this yeast grows so much that it becomes dominant leading to infection.


Factors like douching and several other activities which cause a change in normal vaginal flora can lead to a yeast infection. Lack of sleep and a nutritional diet also contributes to the growth of the infection.

 

According to industrial statistics, vaginal yeast infective is expected to grow more rapidly by the year 2023 since the percentage has already risen to 5.2% from 2017.


Candida multiplies in multitudes due to the loss of chemical balance in the vagina.


Some of the common causes are as follows:-


  • Hormones – A lot of hormonal changes take place in the pregnancy phase or your breastfeeding and menopause stage. If you also do regularly intake birth control pills then it may cause some imbalance in your vagina.
  • Antibiotics – If you usually take antibiotics, then be precautions since these drugs kill and make the good bacteria disappear from your vagina.
  • Diabetes – An escalation of intake of sugar and in the mucus membrane or commonly known as moist linings of your vagina can stimulate the growth of yeast. It's advisory to keep your diabetes in control.
  • Sex – Even though yeast infection doesn't come in a section of sexually transmitted disease but it spreads through sexual contact from person to person.
  • Weak immune system – If you lack a good immune system or if you're HIV positive patient then the growth of yeast may be getting out of order.


Diagnosis:


To diagnose a yeast infection, would lead to several enquires like:-


  • Brief information about your medical history – The doctor would enquire about your past medical history like your sexual orientation details or if you have had any vaginal infections in the past.
  • Pelvic exam – Your doctor examines your internal genitals for some infection signs. To hold the vaginal walls open to observe the vagina and cervix an instrument called a speculum is placed in your vagina to help in the process.
  • Examination of vaginal secretions – Identification of fungus for determination of the category of fungus causing the infection is mandatory. Doctors send a sample of vaginal fluid for the examination of the bacteria.

The common symptoms of vaginal yeast infection include:-


  • Problematic Sensations – The tissue which surrounds the vagina faces different burning sensations like itching, burning, irritation in the vagina.
  • Severe pain – There are acute pain and soreness in the region surrounding the vagina or in the opening of the vagina due to destructive bacteria.
  • Irregular Discharge – Due to this bacterial overgrowth in the vagina an irregular discharge of thick, white, colourless and odourless watery discharge or sometimes it has a resemblance of cottage cheese takes place.
  • Sexual Orientation – If you have got a vaginal yeast infection, then also if you're sexually active then during intercourse or urination there's a huge chance of feeling sensation of vagina getting burned.
  • Unusual marks – One of the most common symptoms is developing rashes and redness, swelling, itching, skin fissures in the surrounding region of the vagina.


Vaginal Yeast Infection: Treatment:-


The treatment for the vaginal yeast infection depends solely on the severity and the rate of overgrowth of bacteria which takes place as a result:-


If you've mild and moderate symptoms they can be treated in the following way:-


  • Short-course vaginal therapy – To clear a yeast infection it's advisable to take antifungal medication for usually three to seven days. Antifungal medications which are available and identifiable in the form of creams, ointments, tablets and suppositories — include a compound called fluconazole popularly known as Monistat 3 and terconazole. These medications are very accessible over-the-counter and should be taken by prescription only.
  • Single-dose oral medication – Your doctor's prescription must be in the inclusion of a one-time, single oral dose of fluconazole also called Diflucan. Oral medication isn't should not be undertaken in case of pregnancy. For more delicate management of such severe symptoms, you might intake two single doses three days apart.


There are different treatments if you face severe symptoms:-


  1. Long-course vaginal therapy – Your doctor's prescription might include an antifungal medication taken regularly for up to two weeks, which could be followed by once a week for consecutively six months.

This medication should be undertaken by being extra precautions since it can be proven fatal if taken orally and is used only for the treatment of candida fungus that acts as a resistance to the usual antifungal agents.

Every year 3 out of 4 women end up having this yeast infection at some point during their lifetime and many women even experience at least two yeast infections in their lifetime which results in severe pain.


Yeast infections don't come into the category of sexually transmitted disease. They are not contagious and can’t be spread to another person during sexual orientation. People can also get a yeast infection on their mouth if they don't maintain the necessary precautions and it may get developed into the throat or tongue which is popularly regarded as thrush.
