What is Kumbhak?


Kumbhaka is a component of the four-step method of Yoga breathwork. The general public see respiration as a ballroom dancing method, eupneic and euphemism. In Yoga, however, there's way more depth. There some side effects while performing kumbhak


  • Lethargy 

  • Headache

  • Dizziness

  • Lassitude

  • Lack of stability in thoughts 

  • Vomiting

  • Indigestion

  • Constipation

  • Dryness of mouth 

  • Body ache, back ache

  • Blurred vision

  • Variation in blood pressure and blood sugar levels


There some side effects if Kumbhak is done in the following ways


1.Self therapy

 Self treatment or medication is dangerous as per ayurveda ,the best method to get practiced with ayurveda is just we have to spend money and find experts , learn and win.


2.Closed Room without windows

One of the main criteria for side effects is a closed environment without ventilation. It should be practiced under an airy environment or under natural atmosphere, since retention of breath is the primary factor.


3.Hurried mind or lack of calmness

This is also considered as a negative achiever for Kumbhak , we do yoga or medication only for mind calmness and peace , so in order to achieve the goal it is mandatory to balance our mind before practice. If you're over stressed or depressed please quit that day.


4.External Noise

It is ok to hear any birds creeping, wind blowing, water streaming, rather than noise pollution like vehicle horn, human sound , high volumed songs, fights.


5.Wrong Sitting posture

It can be done through continued practice of yoga , sitting in a chair, or table or cushioned sofa will not give you a 100% result of what you ought to achieve. Sitting on a yoga mat or a simple grass mat is enough to correct our spinal cord to be vertical. Sitting straight gives relief to your back pain.


6.Over doing retention of breath

There is a time limit to do Kumbhaka , this can be learned from experts, doing for long hours or time may result in your “vata” from your body to go awry.


7.Doing it very hungry

Doing it in an empty stomach may affect “Agni” dosha as per ayurveda, so please consume salads before doing kumbhaka in order to avoid indigestion and migraine related issues.


8.Doing it soon after food

It is not advised to perform kumbhaka after a full meal or dinner. Better to practice after a small breakfast.


9.Too much concentration in between the Eye-brow area

Experts advice is one should concentrate on breathing the shringataka area, by keeping closed eyes, but in reality it is very difficult to be followed only after continuous practice one can do this, so just concentrate on your tip of the nose at an initial stage and slowly develop your concentration over the shringataka area.


10.Hurried activity after Kumbhaka

After doing retention of breath , one must take meditation or yoga or pray for at least 10 minutes, hurrying to the office or meeting will cause high anxiety. Gradually increase your activities.


11.Yawning during kumbhaka

It indicates that one did not get proper sleep before night. If you feel like yawning then it's ok to yawn first and breathe for a minute and resume Kumbhaka. As per ayurveda, holding or stopping yawning is not good.


12.Increased blood pressure

If one has high blood pressure it is not advised to do retention of breath, they can be practiced under the expert only on regular basis of check up. It is good if it is done under proper guidelines and procedure.
