What are natural and home remedies for vaginal itching?

Vaginal itching is usually vaginal yeast infection which is caused because of the fungus (Fungus i.e. candida albicans lives naturally in the vagina) overgrowth. This infection is also called vaginal candidiasis. The overgrowth of fungus triggers painful discharge, itching, inflammation, itching and inflammation. This can be experienced by any woman at any age. 

There are many causes of vaginal itching like:

1. Greek yogurt: Probiotics contain live bacteria like Lactobacillus acidophilus which can be effective against Candida Albicans. Lactobacillus acidophilus is vital for vaginal healthy environment. Overgrowth caused by C. albicans can be treated with probiotics. Plain Greek yogurt is one of the best home remedies. 
2. Boric acid: Many women have claimed that boric acid is an antiseptic that is used in treating infections. For treating vaginal infections, topical boric acid is recommended by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
You must make sure to use the boric acid is less quantity. If used in higher quantities can be toxic and can lead to failure of circulatory system, kidney damage and in some cases causes’ death. If you are pregnant, it should not be used at all. 
3. Oregano essential oil: Oregano is usually used as a general spice but its essential oil is used for treating yeast infections. Search for oregano essential oil made from wild oregano. Wild oregano contains carvacrol and thymol which are powerful anti-fungals. It is also said that oregano essential oil can help to alter candida albicans growth. 
Note: Essential oil of oregano should not be used if you have blood clotting issues. It is a natural blood thinner which is not good for many people. Additionally, kindly inhale it and not consume it orally. Dilute it with other essential oils like sweet almond or olive oil and inhale it through a diffuser. Do not apply it either. 
4. Probiotic supplements and suppositories: According to the Harvard Health, it is helpful in treating vaginosis. It helps in restoring bacteria yeast balance for the day. Oral probiotics can be taken. Consume it for 10 days, if you want to see visible effects. 
5. Coconut oil: Derived from the flesh of the coconut, it is fatty oil that has many health benefits and also includes some anti-fungal properties. As per strong evidence, it is said that it is one of the best home remedies which is effective against candida albicans. This can simply be used by applying it on the affected area. Make sure to apply organic and pure coconut oil. 
6. Tea tree oil: To kill any type of virus, bacteria and fungi, tea tree oil is another very useful essential oil. As per a trusted source, for treating vaginal infections, has some antifungal properties, and also an effective antimicrobial which helps in breaking down the biofilm. 
Tea tree essential oil is very powerful. It can be diluted with coconut oil or jojoba oil if you use it directly on your skin. Do not consume it orally. If any discomfort occurs, discontinue use it. 
7. Apple cider vinegar: Apple cider vinegar bath is one of the most popular remedies for yeast infection. Many researchers have proved that vinegar has a lot of medicinal uses. 8. Garlic: As per a study in 2005, it was said that garlic has proven to be effective against Candida as it kills it. If you want to treat yeast infection, garlic can be added in your diet. Do not insert it inside the vagina, it pains and burns, thus making you feel more uncomfortable. 
9. Hydrogen peroxide: It is bacteria and also a yeast-killing antiseptic. According to the CDC, Lactobacillus bacteria produce hydrogen peroxide in the vagina which is a biological activity against yeast. Some women have reported that topical usage of hydrogen peroxide has gotten them rid of yeast infection. 
But, there are no strong evidences to prove the same. Do not use it directly on the vagina. Try diluting it in the water or adding it in your bath. Dilute half hydrogen peroxide and half water. 
10. Vitamin C: We all know that vitamin C help sin boosting the immune system. It makes your immune system stronger thus bringing your body back into balance. It is also known as an ascorbic acid that has anti-microbial components. To treat candida overgrowth, this can be added to your diet. Vitamin C intake can be increased to boost your body’s ability against yeast infection. Since, vitamin C is acidic, do not use it directly on the vagina, as it may cause inflammation on your skin. 

What to expect?

After you try using these natural home remedies, it may work for some. But, if you have severe itching then, these might not work for you. It should take at least a week for them to show results, but if it does not work and aggravates the itching, then you should call your doctor.

Following are some tips that will help you in preventing vaginal yeast infections: 

  • Use antibiotics, only when needed
  • Wear cotton underwear and loose fitting bottoms.
  • Reduce sugar intake. Yeast grows fast on sugar. 
  • Do not spend a lot of time in wet clothes. Moist and warn environment aids to yeast growth. 
  • Until and unless advised by doctor, don’t use douches.
  • Avoid using scented vaginal lotions and vaginal deodorant sprays


As mentioned above, home remedies for vaginal itching might or might not work for everybody. Be careful before using essential oils, supplements or any type of herbs. Their quality, purity and safety are not monitored by FDA.
