And the band’s name BLACKPINK usually contrasts to the usual meaning of colour pink which is considered to be feminine. BLACKPINK is group that not only wanted to show their kawaii and pretty side to their audience but also their strong and fierce side, thus bringing in both the sides of women under one roof. Their single ‘Boombayah’ became the first number one hit on Billboard World Digital Songs Charts and also one of the most viewed debut music video by a Korean act.
TWICE – After BLACKPINK, TWICE tops the list as the second top K-pop girl group for the year 2021. TWICE is a nine member girl group under JYP Entertainment and it’s members are Nayeon, Momo, Sana, Jeongyeon, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung and Tzuyu. TWICE is the first female K – pop group to receive a Platinum certification from Recording Industry Association of Japan for both album and CD Single in the same year. Because of their worldwide popularity they are also been called the new or next Nation’s Girl Group.
Red Velvet – Red Velvet a South Korean girl group under SM Entertainment which was originally a four member group with Irene, Seulgi, Wendy and Joy but later on it became a five member group when their fifth member Yeri joined the group a year later. The group Red Velvet is known for the unique image that they represent, the RED represents their brighter, vivid side, whereas the VELVET represents their more elegant and softer sides. They can also be seen in a cameo in the famous 2016 K drama Descendants of the Sun.
Everglow – Everglow is a brand new South Korean girl formed in 2019 under Yuehua Entertainment, which is a multinational talent agency placed in Beijing. Everglow is a six member girl group consisting of Onda, Aisha, EU, Shiyeon, Mia and Yiren. Although not much is known about the group yet as they are still rookie and trying to make a huge hit for themselves but still considering the fact that they are one of the girl groups in top 10 list, they had made a place for them in people’s heart.
GFriend – Gfriend also popularly known as Girlfriend is a South Korean Girl Group under a small entertainment company known as Source Music. They debuted in the year 2015 and are a six member group with members Sowon, Yerin, Eunha, Yuju, SinB and Umji. Unlike other girl groups they came from a small entertainment company but despite that being the case they won numerous rookie awards in 2015 and many awards in 2016 music shows.
Mamamoo – Mamamoo tops the list while standing at number six. The group is a four member girl group with members Solar, Moonbyul, Wheein, Hwasa. Formed under RBW or WA Entertainment is famous for their retro, jazz and R&B concepts, they have gained popularity among the audience for their songs ‘Mr. Ambiguous’ and ‘Um Oh Ah Yeh’. Mamamoo known particularly for their funky song, they also surprised their fans with a pop ballad ‘Paint Me’ in 2017.
EXID – EXID abbreviation for ‘Exceed in Dreaming’ is a K – pop girl group formed under AB Entertainment. EXID is a five member girl group with members LE, Soliji, Jeonghwa, Hani and Hyerin. Although debuted in the year 2012, it was not until 2014 that they gained fame for their music. It was only in 2014, when the released their song ‘Up and Down’ that they got their due fame and popularity.
Oh!GG – Oh!GG is the second unit of the popular girl group Girl’s Generation. This was a sub unit that was formed in 2018 after 3 members of the original group Girl’s generation left SM Entertainment and left the remaining members in hiatus. Thus it was decided that a sub unit of the original group would be formed with the remaining five members who decided to stay back with the agency. Oh!GG is a five member band with members Yuri, Yoona, Taeyeon, Sunny and Hyoyeon.
Itzy – Itzy is a five member girl group formed under JYP Entertainment with members Yeji, Yuna, Lia, Chaeryeong and Ryujin. Even though the band was formed only in 2019, it gained fame and popularity very fast as compared to other groups first because of being under a well-known agency which has also formed groups like miss A and TWICE but also because of the members like Ryujin and Chaeryeong who have competed in various talent shows like Sixteen and K – pop star 3.
IZ*ONE – And last but not the least IZ*ONE is a twelve member girl group formed under Mnet reality competition in 2018. The members of the group are Jang Won-young, Sakura Miyawaki, Jo Yu-ri, Choi Ye-na, An Yu-jin, Nako Yabuki, Kwon Eun-bi, Kang Hye-won, Hitomi Honda, Kim Chae-won, Kim Min-ju, and Lee Chae-yeon. They also have been awarded as the New Artist of the Year.
