This devastating practice needs a full stop! A step towards the overall empowerment of the girl was taken by the government of India on 22nd January 2015. This scheme was launched in the Panipat area of Haryana city. The scheme was finalized by the big efforts of the three parties I.e., Hr Development, Ministries of Women & Child Development, Health & Family Welfare.

What is Beti Bachao Beti Padhao? 

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao is a campaign started by the Indian government and is aimed at the overall welfare of the girls by providing them the right to education. It also put its emphasis on how the existing programs meant for the upliftment of girls can be improved by creating more awareness to the general public on this subject. The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao has certain objectives in place, all of them are mentioned below -

  • The scheme ensures education to the girl child.
  • The scheme promises to remove the gender-based biases selection and ensure to eliminate it from the roots.
  • It confirms that the girl child will be safe, protected and her survival will be given the utmost importance. 


Range of  Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana

The above scheme has been successfully implemented in the following regions. 


  1. First Phase - According to the census 2011, a low child sex ratio has been identified in almost 100 districts. It covers a lot of the states and union territories as well. The selection of the district has been done based on the criteria given below -

  • A total of 5 districts and 5 states are selected which are at the above national average stage. Here, the motive is to implement the CSR activities. 
  • The selection was also made in the district which had the lowest national average. Almost 23 stats and 87 Districts were found like this. 
  • The third mode of selection was in the roots of the districts that are above the national average but were having the dwindling movement. 


  1. Second Phase - In the second phase major steps were taken into account. The CSR activities and the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme were extended to more than 61 districts as supplementary. These 61 districts were chosen from the 11 States or union territories. All these states and UT had CSR numbers below 918 in total. 


  1. Third Phase - The third phase showed outstanding results. The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme and CSR activities exploded to almost 640 plus districts. This data is provided as per the census 2011. On 8th March 2018, it was launched.


Enactment of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme

For the overall supervision, monitoring, and budget management of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme, the responsibility was on the shoulders of the Ministry of Women and Child Development. At the district levels, the DPI will take accountability for managing all the tasks related to the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme. The department of women and child development will be liable to handle all the monitoring of the campaigns and smooth management of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme. BBBP has launched a YouTube channel as well to create awareness among the common folks. It will talk about the decline of the sex child ratio. Even the content is consistently uploaded on the portal of mygov on the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme. It also involves active participation of people, their engagement, and other activities are performed to ensure that the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme is reaching heights and is successful at the grand level. Targets of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao

Every upcoming scheme is made with some targets in place. BBBP Scheme, this same way has some targets that shall be done within some time. 

  • Minimizing the Child Mortality Rate by 7 pointers annually.
  • Increase in the girls' enrolment number for secondary education by more than 82%. 
  • Training people at ground level to Improve the overall CSR Activities for the overall welfare of girls. 
  • Intensifying the Institutional Deliveries by 1.5% annually. 
  • Reducing the malnutrition rate for girls less than 5 years of age. 
  • Bringing the safe environment to undertake the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. 
  • Focusing on enhancing the SRB - Sex Ratio at Birth by more than 2 pointers annually. 
  • Building toilets in good and safe conditions for girls in every school. 


Strategies implemented by Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme

The above scheme was made successful using the following strategies. 

  • Emphasizing the districts which follow gender-biased practices and the areas low in CSR.
  • Enhancing the Community Engagement activities to remove gender-based stereotypes and perception of society.
  • Educating the people working at ground level, and panchayat Institutions, and urban bodies for bringing the required changes in their society.
  • Implementing the Communication Campaign for all the girl children to promote their better education and provide them equal rights. 
  • Making sure to enable the inter-institutional and the Inter-sectoral conjunction at various levels.
