The society that we live in, and the one that is forming for our future, is heavily influenced by self-esteem, personal image as well as aesthetic appearance. The measure of success and happiness in life is based on the social image, and for women, makeup plays a big role.

Makeup products are used to enhance or alter one's appearance. These are applied to change skin color, face shape, natural features such as eyebrows and eyelashes, etc.

How can you choose the right makeup?

Primer with silicone as the main ingredient is best for filling the splits on the skin, making it smooth and perfect for applying makeup. Also, you should follow the order for applying makeup. You should always apply a serum before a moisturizer because the serum has a lighter consistency and applying it after the moisturizer is totally a waste because it won't penetrate through the moisturizer. Concealers should be used as a finisher which remains visible even after applying foundation. Apply lipstick first and then use lip liner just outside lips to add definition and fake fuller lips.  You can apply eye shadow first then the eye liner or the eye liner prior to eye shadow it's your call. Both ways are correct. You must know about your skin tone and should carefully use makeup with the correct knowledge of its ingredients.

What are the things to know before applying makeup?

There are some women who are passionate about it and may even have makeup applications as a hobby or form of leisure. You can use makeup for any reason, but you need always to remember that managing your skin health is more important than physical appearance. So here are a few things to remember before applying makeup.

  1. Cleansing is an important part of your facial care routine, regardless of whether you use makeup or not. By cleansing the face properly and consistently, you minimize the risk of breakouts, dry skin, oily skin and other issues that may come about when the face is dirty. By having dirt or oil on your face while applying makeup, it may not apply well to the skin, it may clog up pores and create acne, and it may even irritate the skin.

  2. Exfoliating your skin before applying makeup is necessary as it opens pores and uncovers new smooth skin beneath. It is used to get rid of dead skin cells.

  3. Primer is used as a protective base which prevents the mixing of foundation and skin oil's balance from makeup. It acts as a barrier to fill fine lines in the skin so that the makeup does not look creased.

  4. Every person has a different skin type be it colour, texture, moisture or overall complexion. It has a significant effect on the type of makeup you use. Just because a brand is famous does not mean it is suitable for your skin. You must know what suits you. For that purpose, you must ensure and study your skin type.

  5. As the beauty industry is very competitive, it’s easy to get lost and confused amongst the many brands so you are required to research the different brands of makeup. You must know what is suitable for your skin type, your complexion type, and what generally works best for you.

  6. Moisturize your skin twice a day as it prevents your skin from going dry, creating oil and acne breakouts. Applying makeup on a moisturized face is easier.

  7. The long list of steps while applying makeup can confuse you so you should document the steps and know what best suits you. Create habits on makeup routine to follow.

  8. Ensure drinking enough water in a day and up your consumption on hotter days to stay hydrated. Staying hydrated keeps your skin hydrated, supple and replenished.

How to know that a particular makeup brand is chemical free?

It is tough to find completely organic cosmetics or makeup. Some of the chemicals in the makeup are really harsh that leach into your skin throughout the day. To keep yourself safe you must know how to check whether makeup is chemical free or not. This can be checked using following steps:

  • Look for a MADE SAFE logo in the label of makeup. It ensures that the makeup is chemical free and has no contamination and if it is present then the makeup is safe to use without any worry.

  • Claims like "organic," "natural," "vegan," or "chemical-free" on labels must be checked while shopping. Products usually have specific claims like phthalate-free, sulfate-free, and paraben-free which means it has no harmful products left.

  • As the skin is very sensitive and it can absorb anything through pores, it is important to check the ingredients of anything applying on it.

  • Makeup can leach chemicals into your skin throughout the day hence, if you’re buying blush, eyeshadow, powder, etc., titanium dioxide, carbon black, PTFE, talc, BHA, silica, quaternium-15, imidazolidine urea all must be avoided.

  • A number of websites provide searchable databases that allow you to check the safety of your cosmetic product. The databases also let you search any potentially harmful chemical and find a list of products that contain it.

What does chemical free cosmetics really mean?

Whenever someone hears the term chemical free, they believe the product to be safe, environment friendly and clean. But every organic, vegan, 100% natural claimed product has some amount of chemical in it.

The beauty industry is all about results, longer lashes, the “24-hour effect”, or volumized hair. Just because of this, an avid awareness of certain chemical ingredients used to achieve the results are not in our focus. Thus, in the natural & organic cosmetic circles, we are not provided with information about toxic, harmful or carcinogenic ingredients that we don’t want to be using.

This awareness of chemicals is important because there are some pretty nasty chemicals that need to be removed from personal care products.

When do you need to see a doctor?

If you are suffering from skin or health complications, applying makeup may not be a good idea. If makeup inflames your skin or it reacts negatively, it is best to speak with a specialist or consult a dermatologist.
